I'm having a small problem with the Newton wrapper 1.32 and DB Pro 5.8. Both is the first time they've been on my system so everything is new as far as installs.
On any of the demos, each crashes when the Esc key is pressed, or using 'q' to exit. It causes an "Illegal operation" dialog, saying that (progname) caused the error in Newton.dll. I can run some of the demos fine, it's only on the exit that it causes the crash ("Illegal operation" dialog with Close button).
I'm mainly interested in the Demo02 of the falling shapes and collisions, gravity, etc. It could be exactly what I need in a project I'm working on, if I could get past the crashing bug. I'm wondering if the Newton needs a rewrite to go with DBP 5.8, or if it's something with my system or my DBPro that I can fix. I could probably use it as-is if I could get past the crashing bug.
I'd love to be able to use it since the idea of being able to skip the step of having to create my own 'fake' physics animations would make me happy to no end.

have you opdated your DBPro IDE? that is absolutely necessary. there is an update link on the Game Creators site.

Yes, I did...I downloaded the 1.09 update from the DB website, as well as the 1.09b (AKA 1.09.2) update to go with it. Still a crash on exit. I noticed the IDE had the bug of not being able to see type when some functions were folded, so I asked around and learned of an 'unofficial' patch made by the author of the DB IDE that fixes (removes) the folded-funtion/typing bug, as well as a few other, he said. So I put that one in and still a crash on exit with Newton.dll. However, I had tried Newton when I just had the 1.09/1.09b updates installed, and the problem was still present.
I have a base-model PCI graphics card, but I'd doubt that Newton is doing anything with accessing the graphics system directly? I thought it could be my system somehow, if it's an unknown problem. But I have a sound card, video card, all the standards...256 RAM, etc. I can run a couple of the demos OK (I stopped looking a while after Demo02 because it looked like exactly what I needed), but others crash.
But I didn't get any updates to the demos you may have provided, I've only tried the demos that come in the DB Newton 1.32 package (.rar).
Of the demos I can run, they run great, especially '02, but I haven't been able to circumvent the illegal operation error on those that do run. I guess I'll try some simple tests of starting my own Newton project from scratch, with _NewtonCreate, maybe create an object, then _NewtonDestroy, and see what happens.

Well, I have since found out a little bit of information concerning the problem, and it seems to deal with running on Windows 98 as an operating system. People have said that running Newton on a Windows 98 system will cause that crash on exit, and I can understand that if the memory-handling is different between the old Windows 98 system and XP, if this what system Newton was designed on.
Some people seemd to think it could be if there was an 'exit' used anywhere in the program, that might cause it, or to make the last statement in a program be and 'End' statement, but neither helped, although I was hoping. I finally determined it must just be the exit back to the operating system, and that was a little disappointing considering I might not be able to use Newton.
Far be it for me to hound someone about their projects, but could this problem be solved someday? Not that I'm asking you to solve it right now, but may there be a time when it is solved, if this is indeed the correct answer to what is causing the crashes?

unfortunately, the effort required to develop for Win98 doesn't seem to be worth the (few) users it helps. this problem is most likely inside Newton itself, or inside DBPro, either way, there is nothing the wrapper can do to fix it... sorry  |

Well, I will certainly be keeping track of Newton and how it develops...Perhaps it will be ironed out some day. But I have heard of other physics packages possibly being available for DBPro at some time, although they will be sold products. Nonetheless, I'm eager to see some kind of fast, useable (relatively easy to grasp, like Newton) physics plugin for DBPro, to make trying to program real-looking physical reactions just a bit easier. I'll probably continue to try out Newton for the fun of it, just that I don't think I could use it in my current project, which was what I had hoped.
But it still impressive, for me just for the rigid body simulations, but then add the vehicle, joints and ragdoll stuff and it looks that much more impressive. So I'll be keeping along with it, hopefully I can use it or some other one some day. Cheers!

just get XP man. it's just as stable as 98 ever was... I can't think of any good reason to stick with 98 at this point...

Well you know, I would, I'm just afraid that the overhead would kill my machine too much. See, I used to have a pretty well decnt video card, a Hercules Prophet II Ultra, that had 64 MB of RAM. It was the top-of-the line card at the time I bought it (something like 3-4 years ago), but in the next 2 years or so, it was of course surpassed.
But it dam well held it's own very well..it still played any new games I was getting like champ. It was not until the games of today, right now, that it would really be showing it would have a problem with them. Sure it could still run them, just not at the setting that today's video cards do. It worked like a champ up until about 6 months ago when something fried on it, and all I got out of it was a screen with very messed up colors and dark, black bands through it, and very muddy and blurred. Obviously screwed up, but the accleration, 3d, etc., all still worked fine, it was just something in the output of the display that got messed up. In other words, I could still use the card if it wasn't for the totally screwed display it was putting out. So, of course not being able to afford a really new video card, I had to a low-end PCI video card just to have something to be able to still use the computer.
But, at the time the old GeForce2 Ultra (the Hercules) was still running, I took a stab at trying out XP. I could immediately see what effect it had on my system. Just that much slower and using more RAM. I have no doubts about its stability; I'm sure it's as stable as any, it's just the overhead that goes with it. It's an AMD 1.2 Mhz processor too, that I can run at a max of 1100Mhz with stability. So with my machine now, that's why I've stuck with 98. It's so much less to have to deal with on the system, and I think it might make at least my system as it is now, run better than if I was using something else.
But there is no doubt....with my next machine, I'd love it to be good enough to run XP without any problem whatsoever:
- a top-end motherboard
- a 4Ghz 64-bit processor, or whatever is available at the time, and maybe even 2 of them in the machine.
-at least 1 gig. of RAM, or as much as possible.
- The latest, best video card at the time, which would probably be PCI express by that time.
- and all the storage hardware, sound, etc. I can get by with a middle-of-the-road sound card.
And that would be the machine I'd be glad to run XP on. Thing is, i'd probably take that system and run Win98 on it, just to see what it could do! Ahh, dreams...
But I might reach that point someday, and if found that I absolutely had to switch to XP to be able to use Newton, then it might just come to that....

I have a problem with advanced terrain too :
the program crash (without any message) when it try to create the tree colision with the terrain :
"col = NDB_NewtonCreateTreeCollision( 1, 1 )"
I have the last release of the wrapper (1.32b) and I use the 5.9b4 version of DBPro.
I've tried to run the compiled demo which was on the walaber web site and advanced terrain crash at the same moment.
Have everybody this problem?
