Interesting, I tweaked the level and the phantom triangle went away and the level now loads properly. All I really did was break some quads up into triangles. I figured that would reduce the tree collision's chance of generating a bogus collision triangle. -- TAZ

I've been using Metasequoia LE to make the .X terrain meshes. Never seen that problem with Meta before. I'm guessing that it you hand optimize parts of the mesh it makes it easier for Newton like spliting quads the way you want them split. -- TAZ

I've added two more levels and I think I have that pesky chaos bug beaten into submission. Please download the latest WIP and give it a test drive. www.fire-on-the-suns.com/ice_snake.zipIf you blow the 60 second bonus timer, I've added a yellow pointer to help the players find any hidden berriers. Levels 5 and 6 are tougher. Five is something of a challenge to beat within the time allowed. Level 6 is just downright deadly. -- TAZ

Wow this snake game is looking more and more interesting. I played levels 1, 2, 3 then I touch the lava, and it gave me game over. This is very cool. and the snake really like a snake, at least is does to me.

I'll check into that, it should reset the level when you die. I had another tester get the chaos bug (again), so it is not completely dead. -- TAZ

indeed, this keeps getting better and better. I still can't get it to crash on my machine, and I played all 6 levels this morning level 6 was surprisingly easy for me... probably because I've playtested the game so much I like the game a lot so far, and you still have a month to add fun little extras to it! I'm barely going to make the deadline with a minimum game, if I make it at all

The feeling is very interesting in controling the snake, I have never experienced anything like that, and I have played most of the videogames ever existed ! ;D It feels a bit as the body of the snake is lame and all the momentum lies within the head. Maybe not a truly correct interpretation of a real snake, but still interesting. Much of the Game lies within the creation of the levels, To make the game more interesting, maybe you should have a time limit on each level, that makes the 'I must try again' - feeling become more prevailing. But then again, as the balls fall in different locations that might be a too hard challenge for the player. Remember the original snake game where the snake always have a constant speed and the thing is to avoid hitting the tail as the snake grows longer. Have you considered implementing this into your game ? Maybe as a play option adventure / Arcade style ? I really begin to think that this your game is going to be something really interesting in the end ! Just some comments from my head .... Keep up ! ;D

I still have a few technical challenges to address, but I have been trying to focus more on game play and game options.
You're right about level design being the key. Previously, the goal has been learning to make functional levels. Now, I'm starting to add some 'fun' elelments such as difficult terrain, features like grav-lifts, and I plan to add 'scoring' features for soccer and the pool table. There is a time elelment in that after 60 seconds you lose any timer bonus. So, some levels are speed rounds, some are puzzles, and others are survival. Hopefully I can put some polish on this project and come up with more visually appealing levels by the end of the competition.
That's part of the 'challenge' that I wanted to include. You control the head and the snake's body plays follow the leader (most of the time.) On several of the later levels you have to plan where to go first and which berries to eat now or later. A long snake can really impact your bonus points when you get caught on a ramp or in a tight intersection.
Speaking of features, Walaber, how goes that Newton AVI splash screen? I think it is a very neat idea and has a lot of impact. I'd love to include it in my game as well, with your permission, of course. -- TAZ

Another update, fixed some level design glitches, updated some textures, added a pool table level. That bring the level total up to seven, I'm gunning for 10 levels and then I'll got back and add more game stuff like soccer and pool bonus scoring.
I also turned off the fps limiting calls to see what some of you people with good machines are getting for speed and if affects game play. -- TAZ

I'll give the new updated version a try...
as for the splash screen... I just need to collect it up into a nice stand-alone function, and then I'll send it to you.
I also might convert all of the textures to .DDS for faster loading + smaller footprint in memory. of course the function will delete everything it creates on exit.
feel free to fiddle with it (change the camera angle, etc) to your own liking. I'll try to send it to you tonight when I get home.

Just a quick note to let you all know that progress continues on Ice Snake. I'm adding sound effects, background ogg vorbis music, and expanded levels with more features. -- TAZ

Just a bump, I plan to post the full source and most of the media to make a 'developers version' of Ice Snake. But, I don't want to steal any of TGC's thunder so I'll probably wait until the contest announcements are made and see how they want to handle the source code that I included with the entry. -- TAZ

The link above doesn't work... do you have another link to the game? I'd like to see it.
